After the Accident

If you are involved in an accident, there are a few things you should do first. The first thing you should do is stop. By law in Ireland, you are required to stop if you are involved in an accident. The second thing you should check is that you, your passengers and all other parties involved in the accident are safe and out of danger. If anybody involved in the accident is hurt or needs medical attention, you should ring the emergency services immediately. You must report the accident to the Gardai to obtain an incident number.

At this point, you should exchange information with any third party involved. Below you will find the information that you would need to receive from the third party:

  • Name
  • Address and phone number
  • Vehicle make and model
  • Registration number
  • Insurance company
  • Policy number

Similarly, you should give the above information on your behalf to the third party. If circumstances allow, it can be beneficial to take photos of the scene before any vehicles are moved. The images should show where the incident took place and any damage that your vehicle and any other vehicles sustained. It is also recommended to take a picture of the other vehicle’s insurance windscreen disc. It’s important to remember that even if you feel you may have been the driver at fault during the accident, you should not take responsibility at this point until you have contacted your van insurer.

While the details of the incident are still fresh in your mind, you should get in contact with whichever insurance company your van insurance policy is with. If you are not sure which insurer your van insurance policy is with, check your insurance certificate to confirm the insurance company. We put together a list of van insurance claims contact numbers for all insurers, which you will find here. It is important that you provide the policy number and details of the accident to the representative. Once the claim is registered, make sure you receive the claim number from the representative.

Breakdown Assistance

Now you can focus on getting back on the road safely again. If your van insurance policy includes breakdown assistance, you should contact the breakdown assistance number for your insurer from the list here. If you do not have roadside assistance included in your van insurance policy, we recommend ringing a local garage to help get you back on the road.

The most important thing to remember is that if you do happen to have an accident on the road, don’t panic!
