A Sharp Drop in Claims - But Risks Remain
According to the report, over 30,000 public liability claims were submitted between 2019 and 2023, totalling nearly €180 million in compensation. In 2023 alone, 4,795 claims were submitted, down 40% from 2019 levels. This decline is likely due to several factors: pandemic-related restrictions, changes in public behaviour, and the introduction of the Personal Injuries Guidelines in April 2021, which lowered award values and may have discouraged borderline claims. But despite the drop in numbers, the cost and consequences of accidents are still very real.Where Accidents Happen Most
Three settings made up over half of all public liability claims in Ireland:- Roads and footpaths: 7,839 claims
- Shops and stores: 5,118 claims
- Cafés, hotels, and restaurants: 3,564 claims
- Uneven footpaths caused over €4 million in compensation.
- Potholes added another €1.08 million.
- Defective manhole covers and drains also contributed.
